Research

Membership of our Society has many advantages to offer.  One of the most popular of these is our Research Service which we can provide to members living too far away to join us in the Research Centre.

Our Research Service is carried out by a small team of volunteers who are members of the Society.  They are enthusiastic amateurs with some knowledge of genealogy and a little spare time to give.  The amount of research they can do is therefore limited.

Our Research Team will be happy to investigate a single ancestor of your choice, and provide you with a report on everything they have discovered – family details, occupations, addresses and so on.  Everything, in fact, that you need to pursue the search further by yourself, using the sources employed in the report.

Our Research Service covers Glasgow and the old counties of Lanarkshire, Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, Ayrshire, Bute and parts of Argyll.  If your ancestors came from outside these areas, we would recommend that you contact the family history society for that area or use ScotlandsPeople, either online or at one of the Family History Centres across Scotland.

No fee is charged but all expenses must be reimbursed.  This covers outlays such as postage, photocopying, copies from statutory registers, phone expenses etc.  We ask for a deposit of £10 at the beginning of the research and this is deductible from the final expenses account.  We are however a charitable organisation dependent on subscriptions and sales to survive, so a financial donation would be appreciated.

If you are on Facebook, you can join our Group and post a query – one of the 4,500 group members will probably be able to help!

If serious reseach is required, members are advised to find a professional genealogist via The Association of Scottish Genealogists & Researchers in Archives
