Description
Gorbals Old Burying Ground – Rose Garden, Glasgow Monument Inscriptions is a detailed record of the surviving memorial inscriptions from one of Glasgow’s oldest burial grounds. Compiled by J. Scott Fairie, this publication combines field survey work, monument transcription and archival research to preserve information from stones that have survived centuries of change.
The history of the site reflects the development of the Gorbals itself. The Barony of Gorbals formed part of the Parish of Govan and was acquired in 1650 by Glasgow Town Council, the Trades House and Hutchesons Hospital. A burying ground was established in 1715 between Rutherglen Loan and the Blind Burn, later expanding in 1807 as Hutchesontown developed. By the late nineteenth century, part of the burial ground was lost to the widening of Old Rutherglen Road, with remains reinterred elsewhere.
The 20-page publication provides valuable historical context alongside a complete transcription of 90 surviving gravestones and wall tablets within the present-day Gorbals Rose Garden. Researchers will find surname and full-name indexes, references to lair records, selected photographs of surviving memorials, and historical mapping including an 1861 Ordnance Survey town plan. The volume contents include a preface, abbreviations and location guide, an introduction to the history of the burial ground, a 1:500 town plan, surname and full-name indexes, transcripts of surviving stones, burial ground photographs, and an annex comparing surviving memorials with historical lair records. Produced by the Glasgow & West of Scotland Family History Society, this short volume is a valuable resource for genealogists, local historians and anyone interested in the people, families and heritage of the Gorbals district.
