Description

Glasgow Cathedral New Burying Ground  & St Mungo’s Burying Ground

The New Burying Ground lies on the north side of Glasgow High Church or Cathedral. For much of its existence it has been bounded on the west by the Royal Infirmary. Originally, there was no development to the north, then the short-lived St Mungo’s Burying Ground was located here 1832-1906. This land is now occupied by part of the Infirmary complex, as is that behind the east wall.

The Society’s transcripts were made mainly in the summer of 1982 and a small part was completed in 1984. The typed draft was checked against extant stones in mid 1994, but owing to personal circumstances, this material never reached the stage of publication. A further record was made in the summer of 1987 by the Scottish Urban Archaeological Trust (SUAT) as part of a government-funded scheme for young people. This work took place just before a small area at the western end of the burying ground was paved over to provide parking space for Infirmary staff. Although records show that the south end of this ground was sold for burial purposes, the plan drawn up by SUAT did not indicate any headstones in the area. A line-by-line study of surviving burial registers might indicate if these lairs were used, but that is beyond the scope of this book.
