From the Cottage to the Castle: the Coats Dynasty of Paisley – Stephen Clancy

In this talk, historian Stephen Clancy will tell us about his research into one of Paisley’s most prominent families, the Coats. James Coats built his first small mill in 1826. In 1830, after perfecting his thread, he retired. His sons, James and Peter, founded the firm of J & P Coats which became one of the major manufacturers in Paisley’s textile sector.

Stephen graduated from the University of Glasgow with a MA(Hons) in History. Stephen has worked as an archaeologist on many digs in Paisley & taught numerous university courses in local history & genealogy. Stephen now carries out genealogical and historical research while delivering local talks and walking tours.
