Back in the 20th century, before online access to data sets, registers and search tools, members of the Society, led by John McCreadie & Elizabeth D. Smith, undertook to photograph, transcribe and index a whole series of monumental inscriptions (MIs). These included:

  • Alexandria, Bonhill, &Millburn Renton in Alexandria, Dumbartonshire
  • Old Kilpatrick Churchyard
  • Lennoxtown – Campsie churchyard
  • Tollcross Cemetery & Churchyard
  • Glasgow Necropolis
  • Oban, Argyllshire
  • Calton Old, Glasgow
  • Pollokshaws, Glasgow
  • Cathcart, Glasgow
  • St John the Evangelist, Baillieston
  • Shettleston old Churchyard, Baillieston

As well as from paper records:

  • Glasgow passports
  • Boer War Glasgow burgesses
  • Glasgow chimney sweeps

The Society has published many of these records as booklets and CDs which are available from the Shop. Some of them will become available to search in the Data Sets on this website.

Current and Future

The Projects team is currently working on Baillieston Churchyard and has plans to finish the Glasgow Cathedral burial ground that was started years ago but not completed. When the Mitchell reopens the team will continue recording Glasgow Pedlars.

If you want to get involved in photography, transcription, indexing, typing up or publication of original records, please email the Projects co-ordinator
