Never ignore or dismiss ‘cause of death’ on certificates, it can indicate a lot more to investigate. Occasionally it can be quite chilling – on convicted murderer Peter Manuel’s death cert for example, a prison officer notified the death and cause was given as ‘judicial hanging.’
Irish death certificates can be amusing at times. ‘Worn out’, I have seen, and indeed that probably gives you more information than syncope which is simply the medical term for ‘fainting’… not much information there. Present day doctors tell me that they are not really allowed to put phrases like worn out or old age…there HAS to be a cause.
