About The Society
The Glasgow & West of Scotland Family History Society is a charity and is run entirely by volunteers,
who give their time & talents to provide a service to assist others interested in researching their family history.
The society was founded in 1977 with the aim of promoting the study of family history, particularly for those whose family
history has links with Glasgow and the west of Scotland. Please see the
map of our area and
our parishes for details of this area.
We do not undertake comprehensive research for others as our goal is to provide facilities, guidance, assistance and encouragement
for our members and to enable them to find the enjoyment and satisfaction in discovering their ancestors.
We can however undertake limited research assistance
for our members. Unfortunately this service has to be restricted to our members only.
Please see the "Services" and "Resources" sections of this website for full details of the assistance and the many facilities
and benefits the Society can provide. These are all freely available to our members while non-members are also very welcome to
visit our Research Centre , where,
for a donation, they can share in the use of these facilities.
Members can register
with the members area of our
Website where they will find society information, interesting articles and
several useful indexed databases which are constantly being added to. In this area members can view any responses to their
Guestbook postings or renew their membership via PayPal.
Soon they will also be able to update their own Members' Interests information when logged into this section.
Anyone interested in investigating their family history can find details of joining the society and an application form in our
Joining Us page.
Mitchell Library and Glasgow City Archives
Our society enjoys a close relationship with the
Mitchell Library and
Glasgow City Archives, and we are indebted to them and their staff for the interest and support they provide to the society and to our members.
